Pep Rally & Spirit Night Performance

Categories: Events | Posted: October 10, 2012 | Comments Off

The Fort Mill High School Marching Band will perform on the lawn in front of Fish Market at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17. This date is in conjunction with “spirit week” at Fort Mill High School and the Homecoming Game will be on Friday, October 19. In Baxter, on October 17th, the band will play this year’s show entitled “Alchemy: Iron to Gold”. It will feature the song “Iron Man” and a ballad, followed by the closer featuring the coronation song from the movie Stardust. Following that, the band will play some pep tunes and be joined by the dance team and cheer team to get the crowd pumped up and ready for the Homecoming game. Baxter Merchants will also be hosting Spirit Nights at their restaurants, as a part of the band’s Dollars For Dublin Campaign. This campaign was kicked off in Baxter Village on St. Patrick’s Day six months ago. The Band greatly appreciates the Community’s support as it raises money for the trip to represent Fort Mill in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland in 2013. Among those hosting a Spirit Night are Beef O’Brady’s, Six Pence Pub, Fratelli, and Sayagos.

Family-friendly Fort Mill recognized by Family Circle as top place to live

FORT MILL –

Population and school enrollment trends tend to suggest that Fort Mill is a nice place to raise a family. One magazine is going a step further than simply suggesting it.

Family Circle, a family magazine with 19 million readers, lists Fort Mill among its “10 Best Towns For Families” in the August issue, which is on newsstands now. The listing is, according to the magazine, a “roundup of perfect places to call home” and was formed after a survey accounted for items like “affordable housing, good neighbors, green spaces, strong public school systems and giving spirits.”

Joining Fort Mill are the communities of Bay Village, Ohio; Vail, Ariz; Lake Oswego, Ore.; Fishers, Ind.; Ballwin, Mo.; Louisville, Colo.; Longmeadow, Mass.; Zachary, La. and Oak Park, Ill.

Fort Mill Mayor Danny Funderburk said the Family Circle listing “confirmed for America what Fort Millians have known all along.”

He added that “We’re fortunate to live in one of the very special places in the country” and that “The Town of Fort Mill is extremely proud of this accolade.”

The online detail at familycircle.com describes “a place where random acts of kindness are the norm.” Mentioned are the transplants who found small-town charm, the strangers who helped a stranded motorist during a “freak snowstorm,” the valedictorian now enrolled at Harvard University and the neighbor who shares her garden’s yield. Noteworthy in town are its strong school district amid rapid growth, the locally-created S.C. Strawberry Festival and the police department’s Do The Right Thing program that awards students who make selfless choices.

A main achievement was the “great schools” ranking, a perfect 10 matched by only three fellow honorees (Bay Village, Lake Oswego, Vail).

“I am pleased that the school district can contribute to the outstanding quality of life enjoyed in Fort Mill by providing an excellent public school option to our citizens,” said Dr. Chuck Epps, superintendent of the Fort Mill School District. “The schools are proud to play a part in this well deserved honor for the town.”

A New York City research firm helped assemble a list of 3,335 cities and towns with populations between 11,000 and 150,000 for the study. About 1,300 of those communities with high concentrations of median incomes between $55,000 and $96,000 were selected. Communities best meeting the “family-friendly criteria” from low crime rate to health care and green space were selected to form the top 10.

Fort Mill, Nation Ford high schools earn national recognition

Two of America’s best high schools are in Fort Mill, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Of the nearly 22,000 high schools the magazine reviewed, Fort Mill and Nation Ford High ranked in the top 8 percent. Within South Carolina, both campuses were among the top 14 schools.

U.S. News analyzed federal data, mostly from the 2009-2010 school year, to compile a list of the nation’s “best high schools” as well as a state-by-state list.

Nationally, Fort Mill High ranked 1,134th and Nation Ford 1,595th out of 4,877 schools that fared well enough to be ranked. Both were awarded a silver medal.

In the Palmetto State, Fort Mill High was rated ninth and Nation Ford 14th.

“It validates what our approach is,” said Fort Mill High Principal Dee Christopher. “Our teachers are very talented and the value that our families and community place in education is very high.”

“I know we are a great school and we work hard, so it’s good to see that validated,” said Nation Ford High Principal Beverly Bowman.

Still, Bowman acknowledged that Fort Mill’s population, which is generally more affluent than much of the state’s, is a factor. Statistics show that low-income students often trail their wealthier peers.

“We don’t have the same challenges that other schools have,” Bowman said. “I do recognize that.”

U.S. News says it partnered with a behavioral and social science research firm to review data, including student scores on state proficiency tests and schools’ efforts to prepare students for the challenge of college-level work.
